All MCI long distance customers will see higher bills in 2003 resulting from greater universal service charges, higher monthly minimums, increases in calling cards, casual calling rates, and new fees. The new charges include:

  • $2.50 per month if MCI Consumers receive their long distance bill with their local phone bill.
  • $5.00 monthly minimum will be imposed on ALL calling plans.
  • Customers will be paying 10.5% of their bill, up from 9.9%, in Universal Service charges.
  • Casual callers, those without an MCI account that place occasional long distance calls, will be paying $3.95 per call surcharge and $0.75 per minute.
  • State-to-state calling card calls will cost $1.25 per minute with a $1.75 direct dial per call surcharge.
  • NEW FEE! February 1, MCI will begin adding a new "tax" of 0.5% - a "Carrier Cost Recovery Charge." This fee is imposed by MCI, not the government, and will account for an additional 0.5% of your monthly bill.

3. The %name% family should stay alert to price-hikes

"Research indicates an alarming trend toward higher cost long distance service. Due to increases in per minute rates, universal services fees, long distance directory assistance, calling card surcharges, and the creation of new 'taxes,' residential customers should expect to pay more for long distance service in 2003" said Kate Dean, spokesperson for TRAC.

TelcoBusters.com cautions you to be alert for announcements of rising telephone rates, and reminds you to monitor your calling patterns and select a monthly plan based on your individual needs, not advertisements! The rule of "too good to be true" applies here too.
Use the rates search engine on www.TelcoBusters.com to find the best rates based on your calling patterns.

Dear %name%,

Please review your own statements for a complete set of price hike announcements. The above cannot be considered complete or accurate for all consumers. In our estimation, Telephone services are kept complex and in-transparent on purpose to confuse the consumer about the true cost of their service. www.TelcoBusters.com can help you make the service more transparent and at the same time help you save money.

Thank you for your patience! I try to keep it short and in bullet-form despite the many subjects that could be written about.

Sincerely,

Webmaster@TelcoBusters.com
